Milestones on the A40
This route, which begins with the old stone with Roman numbers, changes to Arabic at the two mile mark – perhaps indicating a later date. Two Mile Lane which cuts from the Gloucester to Ross road to the Gloucester to Newent road must take its name from the proximity to the two mile marker at Highnam Court.
Once Lea Parish is reached, and thus the County of Hereford, the limestone is replaced by metal (compare the Gloucester to Ledbury route at Staunton). Although appearing identical in style, they have been cast by at least two different foundries in Ross. The mis-spacing of the word Gloucester on the one at Weston suggests that standard moulds were used. The turnpike date for this route is 1726.
