Milestones on the A417
The early part of this route consists of limestone. There is an interesting example at Corse of a possible re-use of an earlier stone – with the back being marked with a Roman number 6 (VI). At Staunton, at the County boundary change they become triangular metal posts with finger pointers. Two miles from Ledbury, however, there is a return to stone. This is the only one to be on a plinth, and carries the initials T.B. which may indicate it was part of the Biddulph estate. It also has the more modern spelling of Gloucester – the only time it occurs in stone.
The turnpike dates for this route begin in 1726 to Hartpury, 1747 to Staunton, and 1764 on to Ledbury.
